Margaret C. Wilmoth, Ph.D., M.S.S., R.N., F.A.A.N., is Professor of Nursing at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, where she teaches and conducts research in the area of psychosocial oncology. She also serves as Brigadier General in the United States Army Reserve, currently assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs as the Assistant for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs.

BG Wilmoth recently completed her tenure as Commanding General, 332nd Medical Brigade, Nashville, Tennessee. She commanded 6,000 soldiers assigned to 59 units across the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico, ensuring their readiness for mobilization and deployment. She also served on the Army Reserve Forces Policy Committee, which advises the Secretary of the Army on the mobilization readiness of the force. Dr. Wilmoth has served on the Gynecologic Cancer Steering Committee of the NIH and as Quality of Life Liaison to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.

Dr. Wilmoth’s sustained work in the area of sexuality as it intersects with chronic illness has influenced and complemented the work of others to form the subspecialty of psychosexual oncology within the field of psychosocial oncology. She has developed two psychometric measures of sexuality and has award-winning publications stemming from her research, international collaborations, and student co-authored publications.

A graduate of the University of Maryland (B.S.N. and M.S. in nursing), Dr. Wilmoth received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the United States Army War College.

Margaret C. Wilmoth, Ph.D., M.S.S., R.N., F.A.A.N., is Professor of Nursing at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She served as the inaugural Executive Vice Dean & Associate Dean, Academic Affairs in the School of Nursing 2017-2023. She was previously the inaugural Dean, Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions, Georgia State University. She retired from the U.S. Army in 2017 at the rank of Major General, with her last assignment as Deputy Surgeon General, U.S. Army Reserve in the Office of the Surgeon General, U.S. Army. She is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, among other awards, and earned the Expert Field Medical Badge.

Her current work is focused on examining health outcomes in military affiliated individuals and veterans who receive care in the civilian sector and working towards the inclusion of key military occupational data in all EHRs, regardless of system of care. A second focus is on achieving education equity for the military child, especially for Reserve-connected children in civilian-centric schools and ensuring adequate and quality programs that address their needs. She was an early leader in examining the impact of cancer and other chronic illnesses on intimacy and sexuality. Other work has examined the well-being of reserve-connected military children, psychiatric evacuation from the theater of war and deployment-related health policy.

A graduate of the University of Maryland (B.S.N. and M.S. in nursing), Dr. Wilmoth received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the United States Army War College. She was the AAN/ANA/ANF Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence, National Academy of Medicine.
