Judy Schaechter is a professor of pediatrics and public health sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where she serves as chair of the Department of Pediatrics, leading faculty and staff to advance child health through education, research, clinical care, and commitment to community. Schaechter is also service chief for child health at Holtz Children’s Hospital and Jackson Health System, providing children with physical, mental health, and supportive social care. She cares for hospitalized and ambulatory patients, with a focus on adolescents and young adults living with complex medical and mental health conditions. She collaborates with child service providers across disciplines in translating scientific findings to policy and programming.
Schaechter led the creation of HealthConnect in Our Schools, a public-private partnership supporting multidisciplinary health teams in 170 schools, as well as HealthConnect in the Early Years, a countywide home visitation program for new and at-risk families. She serves on the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties, helping to shape local Head Start, childcare, and after-school programs. As a member of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida Board, she is also working to expand housing options for families with children facing long-term hospitalization. Schaechter leads tri-lingual teams to bring care and prevention education to children where they are with mobile units and in partnership with community service agencies.
After receiving her BA in religious studies and ethics from Brown University, Schaechter explored the intersection of health beliefs and behaviors during an Arnold Fellowship. She completed her MD and pediatric residency training at Stanford Medical School. Schaechter obtained an MBA from the University of Miami. She is an elected member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Executive Committee for the Council of Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention. The organization recognized her for Outstanding Service in Advocacy in 2018.

Judy Schaechter, MD, MBA, is Chief Medical Officer for MedNetPro, expanding access to care in Latin America and the Caribbean. She also serves the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade and Monroe as Health Consultant and Professional Development Faculty. She is Professor Emerita at the University of Miami, where she teaches in Public Health Sciences and Pediatrics. At the intersection of policy, community, business and education, she seeks to leverage strategy, research and innovation to optimize health.
Schaechter has extensive experience in academics, health care, government and non-profit environments. She integrates improvement and implementation science to build community, support coalitions, and advance health and sustainability for all. Formerly President and CEO of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), Dr. Schaechter championed the setting of standards of excellence in professional certification, continuous learning, and practice improvement to advance child health outcomes. She led strategic planning, fostered structural changes for equity, enhanced professional engagement and strengthened administrative operations. Dr. Schaechter was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/National Academies of Science Health Policy Fellow, staffing the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), where she worked on the COVID response, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) and the American Rescue Plan (ARP). For the eight years prior, Dr. Schaechter served as Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Miami and Chief of Service for Child Health at Jackson Memorial Health System, overseeing a department of 500 and serving a 244-bed hospital.
Schaechter’s clinical practice focuses upon children, adolescents and young adults with complex medical and mental health conditions. Her advocacy spans preventative health, with a concentration on injury and violence prevention, education, and disparity reduction. She has worked to expand health coverage, improve early education, enhance developmental screening, and she led the creation of HealthConnect in Our Schools, a public–private partnership supporting multidisciplinary health teams in 170 Miami-Dade County public schools.
She was educated at Brown University, Stanford School of Medicine, the University of Miami School of Business and Harvard Kennedy School. As an educator, she is focused on professional leadership, policy, public health, sustainability, maternal/child health, mental well-being, environmental health and social determinants. Currently, Judy teaches violence prevention at the University of Miami Department of Public Health Sciences.
