Biography
Susan Hinck, Ph.D., R.N., is Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing at Missouri State University. Her clinical and research background is in gerontology, rural health, and health literacy, with experience in long-term care, home health care, and administration. She received a B.S.N. from Central Missouri State University, an M.N. from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. in nursing from Saint Louis University.
In 2004 she completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the John A. Hartford Center for Nursing Excellence at Oregon Health and Science University and in 2006 was honored as a Hartford Institute geriatric nursing research scholar at New York University. In 2003 she received an award from the American Society on Aging for research focused on cost-effective self-care of the oldest-old persons to help them remain living safely in their own homes as long as possible.
Dr. Hinck has held leadership positions in several professional organizations, including the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the Missouri Nurses Association. She promotes a world view of health care and has been a leader in developing the first service learning courses and study-away course in the Department of Nursing, to strengthen the sense of service to the community. She has been supported by a series of 11 funded projects in the past 6 years. Most recently, she was a co-investigator in a 3-year multidisciplinary project to improve the health of rural Latino immigrants. Other research projects in progress are examining the effectiveness of tailored interventions for health promotion and health education among underserved and at-risk populations. She has made national and international presentations and authored numerous publications.
