Peter Sokolove, M.D.

Peter Sokolove is an endowed professor and chair in the department of emergency medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. Throughout his career, he has worked to improve the quality of emergency care through education, research and health policy development.
Sokolove served as a 2012-2013 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow through the Institute of Medicine in Washington, DC. In that capacity, he worked as health policy staff for the United States Senate Committee on Finance (Senator Max Baucus – Chairman). His work focused on Medicare physician payment system reform and nationwide implementation of electronic health records.
Prior to joining UCSF, Sokolove was a professor and vice chair for academic affairs in the department of emergency medicine at University of California Davis, where he served as the residency program director for more than 10 years. He has lectured widely on a range of topics, and has been recognized with multiple national educational awards for his commitment to excellence in academic emergency medicine.
Sokolove has authored publications in the areas of clinical care, medical education, and health policy. He is past Chair of the Faculty at UC Davis School of Medicine and serves on the Editorial Board of Academic Emergency Medicine. Sokolove has served in various leadership positions within emergency medicine organizations at the state and national levels. He is Past President of the California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and Past President of the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine.
Sokolove received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and his B.S. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He completed residency training in emergency medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Sokolove is board certified in emergency medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
